SOLVED: Cisco 2921: configuring 3G EHWIC

Hi folks !

I've got Cisco 2921 with IOS image is c2900-universalk9-mz.SPA.151-4.M4.bin.

Also I installed EHWIC-3G-HSPA+7 with a working SIM card (yeah, it's work was verified) according to this document. But the router reports that the SIM is removed:

R1# show cellular 0/0/0 security
Card Holder Verification (CHV1) = Disabled
SIM Status = Removed
SIM User Operation Required = None
Number of CHV1 Retries remaining = 255

I've doublechecked if the SIM was correctly and tried to insert a SIM from different operator but with no effect. The state is still "Removed". There is actually no configuration completed for the controller (see running config in attachment).

There's output of another command:

R1# show cellular 0/0/0 all

Any ideas how to get it to work?

Under the show cellular 0/0/0 all command

Integrated Circuit Card ID (ICCID) = ***SIM card number should be here if it was working.

Michael,

do you mean that either SIM-card or EHWIC is faulty ?

Yes. Possibly the SIM card reader on the card or the SIM card itself? Or it could be as simple as the SIM card is not pushed all the way back. Carefully insert the card and then use something like a flat head screwdriver to ensure the card is pushed all the way back. I've had many times where I put the card in and it comes back out a little bit causing issues.

Hmm, if i'd inserted SIM not properly, i would have had difficulties to lock the slot. But everything seemed good: i inserted the card, pressed it (feeling light back pressure from the contacts), then locked and mounted a screw to fix it.

Some photos are attached. Check it out please.

I'm convinced that the card is inserted right. I repeated 3 times with different working SIMs of different operators.

Could there be another reason of this problem?

Sorry I was referring to the 4G cards as the SIM slot is different...I would say something is wrong with the SIM reader on the card. If you aren't seeing the SIM number in any of the show commands then that seems like a  good indicator.

Michael,

BTW, what do you mean when saying "SIM number"? It seems that we can't see the hardprinted number in any of "show *" commands.

Could you suggest some other "show" commands which could help to localize the issue? Thanks.

The ICCID number that should be printed on the SIM card. When you ran this command:

R1# show cellular 0/0/0 all
Hardware Information
====================
Modem Firmware Version = T1_0_3_2AP R361 CNSZ
Modem Firmware built = 04/15/11
Hardware Version = 1.0
International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) = 00000
International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) = 1324132412341324
Integrated Circuit Card ID (ICCID) =
****THERE IS NOTHING HERE***

Meaning the SIM card is not being read properly by the 3G card and not able to show you the SIM card number. There are no other show commands I would recommend at this time as it seems you have other issues. You may try to power cycle the modem and see if that changes anything.

Router(config)#service internal

Router(config)#exit

Router#test cellular 0 modem-power-cycle

Ok, I think I'll try to reload the module according to commands provided.

But could you explain if there is any difference between cellular 0/0/0 and cellular 0/0/1 ? If yes, what is the purpose of it?

Actually I have only one EHWIC installed in slot 0.

SOLVED!

The problem was in a faulty EHWIC and after some basic steps (e.g. upgrading firmware, rebooting modem and so on) TAC engineer initiated an RMA.

The new module works fine. It recognized the SIM at once and I've already confirured it.

Hi:

Can some one please send me link to PDF or other document on how to configure a ehwic 3g-hspa+7 ? I need it on a 1921 and am not sure what he different interfaces are used for. Why does one ehwic show me two interfaces?

Thanks

Mickey

Hi Mickey,

Here is the source: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/1800/1861/software/feature/guide/mrwls_hspa.html#wp1543739 (you can download a .pdf on the same page)

Difference between the two cellular interfaces on EHWIC are also interesting for me, because the configuration done on any will make the EHWIC work. Maybe somebody else could explain.

Hi,is there a future plan that Cisco routers might support voip calls to gsm calls since they have 3G cellular interface
