All,
I suspect that my DSL carrier is responsible for the dropped connection on my 837. Is there anything I can use as evidence to prove this beyond the following log entries?
677464: Jun 20 09:17:54: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface ATM0, changed state to down
677465: Jun 20 09:17:55: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface ATM0, changed state to down
677466: Jun 20 09:18:42: %DIALER-6-UNBIND: Interface Vi1 unbound from profile Di1
677467: Jun 20 09:18:42: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Virtual-Access1, changed state to down

Was it working ok before ?
Take "show dsl interface".
Also try another router/modem.

Paolo,
There is only a Cisco 837 connected to the phone line. The 837 has a built in DSL modem on the ATM0 interface (Alcatel ADSL Module). So there are no other devices to troubleshoot except the 837.
Here is the output from the "show dsl interface ATM0" command while the connection is up:

Your circuit has very high attenuation and will never work good as it is now.
Have telco switch you to a better pair if they have it.

Thank you for the information. What attenuation figure is high (59.0 dB or 31.5 dB) and what should the figure be ideally?
Thanks,
James

hanks for the article. That is a good read. Of course, this gives me more questions.
Note that the output of the "show dsl interface ATM0" command displays two values for attenuation:
ATU-R (DS) = 59.0 dB
ATU-C (US) = 31.5dB
So I have four questions:
1.) What is the difference between the two?
2.) Which one is relevant for my conversation with my carrier?
3.) Where can I see the "Signal to Noise Ratio" (SNR) on my interface stats?
4.) How can I tell from my 837 router if Interleaving is enabled on the carrier side?
I will rate the posts and select a "correct answer" shortly. Thanks for the help!
James

Paolo,
Can you answer the four questions in my last post? Then I will rate your posts. Thanks!
James
