6509 with Sup720 requirement

Hi, one of our customer is running Cisco 6509-NEB chassis with dual fan-mod. Now we've some testing need to be done to POC the new IOS having no issue. I found a vendor that is able to loan us a Cisco 6509 chassic (not NEB version though) with a Sup720 3B engine. I gone through the Sup720 sheets that came in the box, it stated that it required a variable fan tray whereby the Cisco 6509 loan unit already have (its a Fantray version1), later on we only found that to provide sufficient cooling for the Sup720, it require an upgrade to Fantray2. Whereby Cisco 6509-NEB does not require upgrade as there is only 1 type of fantray for it (fan-mod) which is capable of doing that...

Before knowing, we power up the Cisco 6509 installed with Sup720 and a fantray version1, it powered up nicely but after about 5-10minutes, it power off itself with the output failed at the power supply lighted up in red. (The power supply is the 3000watts type).

Is it due to the fantray cause the shutdown, or is the power insufficient as we use the cable that came readily with the chassis, and we never plug the power to a command0-type, we plug the powercord to the wall-mount power extension directly (if according to spec, it provides 13A only). I just curious to know the shutdown of the chassis is due to the power issue or the fantray issue, anyone face this problem before? Regards

Is anyone here knew whether the new Cisco 6509-E require any upgrade to work with Sup720, as the Cisco 6509-E only came with a single choice of fantray, suppose it should work well with Sup720 without any further upgrade aint it?

Hi

As per the data sheets available for both superviosr model Sup720 and 6500 series switch ,you need to have high speed fan tray.

you 6509NEB comes with normal fan tray by default but you 6509E requires a high speed fan tray which is totally different altogether, they differs on the part numbers too.

do check these links for more info..

the NEBS chassis is EOL so I wouldn't be too concerende with trying to get 720's working in it. I've got 6509E's with sup 720's in it and there are no issues. What you need to do is use the power calculator to determine the require power supplies since these things require lots of power.

my customer is running of the NEB-A chassis with dual fan-mod-09 highspeed fantray...(sorry for the previous info as i stated it as NEB chassis, it should be NEB-A).

Now I have the 6509-E with a WS-C6509-E-FAN as well. Since the WS-C6509-E-FAN is a highspeed fantray as well, shouldn't be any issue (thought its the only fantray option for the E-chassis)...what I more concern is, you guys running 6500 series with the main power adapter to a normal wall-mount/server-rack mount power socket, or terminated specially to commando-type of power? Is it ok to run a 2500watts/3000watts PSU through a server mount socket of 13ampere?

And I want to ensure that if I slot in a Sup720 to a 6509 chassis (plain 6509 horizontal, not 6509-E/NEB/NEB-A) with only a normal fantray (version1), would it able to power up? My situation is it powered up but after 5-10minutes, it shut and PSU shown the output failed. Is this due to the fantray or the power...the PSU definitely fit the requirement as it is a 3000w unit, what I worry is the power supply from the testing room I am currently in...but when I still able to console the 6500, I try to show some power status and it written "AC Input = High". Suppose that means the power input is sufficient, aint it? just want to get it clear. regards

Hi

As per the supporting docs both 6509-E and 6509 NEB-A needs to have High speed fan to support Sup720 module. The power supply unit has to be 2500W AC or DC.

From my personal exp with 6509 switches we had installed in the past takes DC input so that you dont need to have and extra internal circutry to have the conversion in and supply the power to the internal ciructs.

And the power cabling were seperate and directly plugged onto seperate boxes which has reduandant inputs, coz you wont be able to afford anykinda downtime coz of the power issues or afford to damage coz of the instable power source.

hi, the problem has been resolved, as we got ourself the new 6509-E chassis with the high-speed fantray, plug to power source using the 2500W-INT power cord, it powered up and finished the testing without any issue, the only problem that bugged me is only converting the CatOS to the normal IOS...after that everything is flawless, for my previous case, since the fantray is not up to par and the power source might be the culprit as well, but I suspect that the shutting down issue is more related to the fantray...regards and thanks for every helps i got here, appreciate that.

Supervisor720 detects when it is placed in a non-NEB chassis with Fantry1. It will voluntarily shut itself down after 5 minutes as a precaution. You will see console messages warning you of this.

sorry for the late update, it solved and its due to the fantray...yikes
