Will DLSw and 802.1q ever be supported together or are there some technical issues that will always force you to use isl trunking with dlsw instead of 802.1q?
problem is that there are switches that don't support isl.

The bottom line is that DLSW and 802.1q will never be a tested and supported combination however, some fixes went into the 802.1Q code, as CSCdv26715, in 12.2(6), and since then, some customers are using them together successfully.

Why can't I use DLSw Ethernet Transparent Redudancy features with Dot1Q trunks ?

Because it is just not a supported feature and never will be unless someone can put together a good business case to justify the cost of implementing it.

It appears as though 802.1q trunks supporting DLSw are being supported in all codes above 12.2.6c

DLSW support matrix documentation at:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/ibsw/ibdlsw/tech/dls24_rg.htm
in table B-3 and note 5, clearly states that 802.1q is not supported.
If you configure, it might work but it's not supported by TAC as it has not been dev-tested for this function

Please check this reference again. The documentation has been recently updated. This capability has been tested and is now supported within the constraints listed in the document (Note 5.)
