Linux Kernel (oracle VM Server) 4.1.12-32-1.3 won't boot - [SOLVED]

Hello.

I've also posted this to the Oracle community but didn't get a useful response yet.

I've upgrade the oracle vm server, which has kernel 4.1.12-32.1.3 on a UCS-C460-M2 server. It crashes. I've installed the same iso on a PC and it worked. Has anyone ever had any issues with kernel boot parameters?

I've tried "xen nomodeset, text, vga=ask" etc, but none seems to work.

If anyone has any idea, I would appreciate that.

Thanks and regards.

David

Hey David,

You said the Oracle VM server. Is this a VM running on a hypervisor or baremetal OEL/RHEL?

Did this work before you upgraded? Or is this a new install? Any previous or later versions work on the same server?

What CIMC version is the C460 running?

When it crashes....any useful kernel panic messages or logging outputs?

Any further info you can provide would be helpful. You can check here for compatible/tested hardware and software combinations:

Hello and thank you so much for the reply.

This was an upgrade (done by the vm manager web interface). It runs directly on its own modified Oracle Linux named vm server. It was working fine and I already did one upgrade from version 3.3.1 to 3.3.3. I've tried to add some lines to the kernel when booting but it still restarts, so, no error message. It crashes a bit after "waiting for hardware to initialize".

Curiously, my vm manager (a normal PC running oracle Linux 6.7) also didn't boot after the update. I had to select the previous kernel.

I've updated CIMC version to 1.5(8a) a few months ago (hmmm the previous vm server upgrade was on the previous firmware version).

Bios version: C460.1.5.4b.0

I'm still trying a few things. If I can solve this I'll post the solution.

Thanks and regards.

Passed option scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=0 to the boot options but still won't boot.

I've tried several kernel boot options, but none of them worked. found the public repository for oracle vm and manually downloaded and install both kernel-uek and kernel-uek-firmware to the latest version available (4.1.12-37-6-3). Now it boots.

Thanks anyway!

Regards

Dave
