Moving a server from a Nexus 2K to Nexus 5K

I currently have a server with 4x 1Gb uplinks connecting to a Nexus 2K FEX. The Nexus 2K then has 8 uplinks into the Nexus 5K. I am planning to remove the Nexus 2K from the network. Am I able to move the server uplinks one at time from the N2K to the N5K? Configuring the port on the N5K in the same port-channels the connections to the N2K?

Charles,

You are able to do this. Do note that the N5K has all 10G interfaces, so using 1 gig links between server and switch, you are underutilizing those ports. You may opt to get a 10G adapter installed in the server and just use 2x 10G uplinks vs 4x 1 Gig links.

HTH,

Wes

Thanks Wesley. Follow up question as well please. Will the port-channel based on 2 different types of media work? (Twinax (N2K) and 10G-SR)

Using the 'show port-channel compatibility-parameters' brings up this parameter. Does this reference that different media types will not work together

* MEDIUM

Members have to have the same medium type configured. This only applies to
ethernet port-channel.

Hey Charles,

Yes, you can use whatever media (copper, SFP+, Twinax) you would like in the port-channel without any limitations. As long as the transceivers are supported for that platform.

Please rate or mark correct this answer if it was helpful.

HTH,

Great thanks Wesley - so to clarify. We are okay to use a selection of media types in one port-channel? As long as speed, duplex, vlans are the same, the port-channel will come up spread across the N2K and the N5K.

Can you clarify what the output from the N5K means then please - struggling to find an explanation anywhere.
