Create graphs from the stacking ports utilization?

We have 4x sg500X-48 switch now and we are still not sure to use the stacking option or not.

Today we run MRTG to read with SNMP the switch stack but I can't find the stacking ports. Also in the webinterface I can't find the stacking ports to see utilization of those ports.

Is there any way to monitor these ports?

Hi Jethro, these ports 'disappear' when being used unless the switch is in standalone mode as theyre not configurable.

Hello Jethro,

One quick way to check if you are actually stacking is to look at the Status and Statistics page.  If you see more than one image of a switch, then you are definately stacked.

You can also go to Administration >> System Mode and Stack Management in the GUI to check your stack settings, or in the CLI try a show stack.

If your switches aren't stacked and you would like them to be, I would recommend backing up your configuration first, since all of the switches except the master get defaulted when they first stack.  This is only a concern if they aren't already stacked, but I figured I would mention it just in case.

Let me know if you need anything else,

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the answers but the question is: How can I see the utilisation of the stack ports?

My switches are stacked in a ring configuration but I want to monitor the stack ports so I know when there is to much traffic on the stack ports that could lead to packet loss or other problems.

Hi Jethro, as indicated, these ports are not "viewable". They "disappear" when being used as a stack port. When using the stack ports, you'll observe an omission in the port list - it will skip those ports as you noted in the first post.
