Difference Between SG100D-08 and SG100D-08P

I currently have the RVS4000 Router and SG100D-08 Switch, and I'm looking at upgrading my router to the RV180 soon. While I'm at it, I'm wondering if I need to upgrade the switch to the SG100D-08P as well or keep the SG100D-08. What is the difference between the SG100D-08 and SG100D-08P, and is there a great enough difference for me to upgrade?

Hello Nathan,

Both the SG100D-08 and SG100-08P are 8 port gigabit switches. The only difference between the two is that the SG100D-08P support power of ethernet (PoE). A PoE switch actually injects DC power onto the ethernet cable. For example, if you plug a PoE capabel phone or wireless access point into a PoE switch, the phone or WAP will receive not only its data connection, but also its power from the ethernet cable. This eliniates the need for a power adapter.

If you use, or plan on using, PoE devices such as phones, you would benifit from the SG100-08P. Otherwise, the SG100-08 would work fine for you.

Thanks for the information! Right now we're primarily using the switch for network only, but when we move to a new infrastructure this year, I'll see if we need PoE or not. If we do, I'll definitely look at upgrading. If not, I'll stay put. Thanks for the clarification!
