I have a 3850 48P, that was pulled from a 3 switch stack.
This switch is no longer going to be part of that stack.
It is currently on version 16.6.4, want to put on 16.12.12
When I try to load the ios, get the following messages.

Before I put any 3850 and 9300 (that we removed from a stack) into storeroom, I would perform a factory reset (factory-reset all).
This will not only clean out the "accessible" flash but also the "locked out" portion of the partition. The switch will boot into ROMMON and put the firmware back in using the command "emergency-install usbflash0:filename.bin".
One of the things this method does is reset the switch provisioning to default value.

Factory reset the switch first, if you did not yet.

Thanks Flavio,
Now, I have a 3 stack of the same flavor/version.
I will need to upgrade it as well, was going to use the following method.
Switch#copy usbflash0:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.12.12.SPA.bin flash:
request platform software package install switch all file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.12.12.SPA.bin switch 1-3
Will that work, without a factory default?

If the switch is not in production and you can perform the factory reset, do it.
You may also upgrade them individually and after that join them in stack. This sounds more laborious but, most of time, save you time.

I have a 3850 48P, that was pulled from a 3 switch stack.
This means you have removed from stack to make standalone ? and you like to upgrade standalone switch.
can you post dir flash:
what is the full command you used here := PD_1st_FL_C3850G_sw#$l file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.12.12.SPA.bin

All is good now, I was able to factory default, and upgrade it.
Best Wishes to all who responded.
