Power up an SG200-08P as a PD

Hello,

I got a used Cisco SG200-08P switch missing its power supply. To check if the switch is still in working conditions, I tried to power it up with a PoE injector connected to port 1 without success. I was wondering if this is conclusive evidence that the switch is broken or whether the functionality of working as a Powered Device (PD) is not available "right off the bat" but needs to be enabled via the web GUI. Thanks

Hi,

No, they are different. The SG200-08P uses a 4-pin power supply of 100V-240V, 1-0.56A, 50-60 HZ, whereas the SG200-08 uses 100V-240V, 0.5A, 50-60 HZ with a common male power connector. But, yes you can power on the SG200-08 through SG200-08P. The only power supply you will need is for the SG200-08P.

Thanks

Hello Mdett,

The SG200 model which supports PD functionality and can be powered by another PoE switch or PSE device is SG200-08. The one that you have is SG200-08P which is a PoE model and can deliver power to 4 of its ports (32W PoE budget). It does not support PD functionality and therefore could not be powered by a PoE device. You must have a port 1 labelled "PoE in" to be able to power on the switch via PoE.

In your case, you would need to find a power supply. For example, one that will work is the following https://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-DC-Adapter-for-Cisco-SG200-08P-8-Port-Small-Business-Gigabit-PoE-Power-Supply-/162882713827

Thanks

Hi Martin,

Thank you very much for your clarifying reply. Can you confirm ehether the two models (SG200-08 and SG200-08P) use the same power supply? If that was the case, then I could purchase a SG200-08 with power supply, use the power supply with the SG200-08P and connect the SG200-08 to it as a PD. Correct?

Highly likely though the SG200-08P needs a beefier power supply to take on its PoE duties.

Thanks,

Marco
