SF300-08 firmware upgrade failures

Hi,

Have started using these switches a lot and they have been upgrading fine from 1.0.0.27 to 1.3.0.59. The last batch I have refuse to upgrade via the GUI. I have tried going version by version and resetting the switch after each upgrade, the highest I got to was 1.2.7.76. When you try uploading the new firmware you see the bytes increase and stop, then get copied failed. Finally decided to try it from the console and TFTP, the error received relates to not enough space to copy the firmware to one of the image locations. If you overwrite the existing image the upgrade completes OK. This is a time consuming process & I can't believe Cisco would not have enought space on the switch to upgrade firmwares. There is no option in the GUI to overwrite an existing image. Has anyone else come across this?

Hi Adam, this is not a known issue.

The biggest difference in the evolution of the firmware came is when 1.2.7.76 was introduced which changed the XML. The switch has sufficient memory for both images and if you're receiving a memory error or insufficient spacing error, this is quite peculiar.

How many units are you experiencing such a failure? Additionally, have you factory reset any of the switches before or after the firmware upgrades?

Upgrading from 1.1.2.0 or earlier to either 1.2.7.76 or 1.3.0.59 I'd strongly recommend you default the switch otherwise you will most probably see abnormal behavior.

Hi Tom,

I have seen your other post about the changes in firmwares and I have tried resetting the switch back to factory defaults before and after each attempt. It looks like via the GUI upload the switch is trying to copy the new firmware rather than replace the inactive image. The console method confirms this, only when you overwrite one image does the upload succeed. Got 10 at the moment, 1st one upgraded fine from 1.0.0.27 to 1.3.0.59, the 2nd switch I got as far as 1.2.7.76 then console method to get 1.3.0.59 onto it. The 3rd I have left it on 1.0.0.27, had enough headaches for 1 day. I'm certain the remainder will go the same.

There is only 16MB of flash, 1.3.0.59 is 6.58MB, does not leave much room on the switch? With some uploads you see the counter increase in the backgound showing the progress, latency to the switch is up and down and this will continue until you reboot the switch. Sometimes you just get a copied failed message half way through.

Any idea what my chances are of getting somebody to look at this issue for me and how I got about doing so?
