2821 LAN Ports 0/0 and 0/1 are in down mode

La1Impala
Level 1
Level 1

Hi    new to routers. I just purchased a 2821 and from using the console cable I received this info below. I would like to use SDM to configure the router. I believe I use port 0/0 and a crossover cable to a laptop or straight through cat5 to a hub or switch. Then I suppose I will use port 0/0 and 0/1 for the internal and external networks after config. BTW which port will be internal and external?

From the router I can ping 192.168.1.1  8.8.8.8  my ISP's DNS server. I cant ping names like Google.com . Is this because I do not have DNS set up in the router? I have seen where DNS is used along with DHCP on the 2821 router. The LAN side of the router will have DHCP , AD and DNS servers so I do not want to configure DHCP on the router,  The DNS server on my network is configured for forwarding.

Yes the reason why your router is not able to ping by name is that you have not set up the router to use DNS to resolve names for packets originated by the router. It is quite simple to set up with something that might look like

ip name-server 8.8.8.8

If you want the router to use more than one name server for redundancy then you add additional name-server commands.

Let me point out that there is a difference between configuring the router to act as a DNS server (which you do not want to do) and configuring the router to use DNS to resolve names for its own traffic (which you do want to do).
