 Hi..

I have recently added a 3550 switch in my network. This switch Fastehernet port connect to distribution switch 2960 Gigabit port. Fastethernet port configured with trunk and dot1Q encapsulation and 2960 Gig port is with trunk only. When i connect a PC on 3550 switch i cannot ping my gateway.

Gateway IP are configured on my core(4500) switch. We have other 2960 switches connected to distribution and dont find issue with it.

Pls suggest where i am doing wrong.

Hi,

Can you issue

sh interface trunk

on both 3550 and the 2960 to make sure the interfaces are configured as dot1.q?

Can you post it here?

also, can you post "sh run" from both switches?

What is the PC vlan id on the 3550?

did you add the vlan to the port?

did you add the PC vlan id to the trunk between the 2960 and the 4500 switch?

HTH

Hi.. Pls see below config & and int trunk output. PC is connected on 184 vlan on 3550 switch. I can ping everything from 3550 switch.but when i connect PC on this switch and give vlan 184 ip then i can not even ping gateway.Though i can ping 184 vlan gateway from 3550 switch.

Hi,

Did you create the layer-2 vlan (184) on the 3550 switch.

config t

vlan 184

name data-vlan

exit

and test again from the PC?

sh vlan summary

HTH

Hi... I already tried this and did this agian but no luck. Its not working.

Can you post the output of "sh vlan summary"

 Hi. See below

3550#sh vlan summ
Number of existing VLANs           : 54
Number of existing VTP VLANs      : 54
Number of existing extended VLANs : 0

my one concern is..can trunking between FastEthernet & Gigabit configured and working??

my one concern is..can trunking between FastEthernet & Gigabit configured and working??

As long the interface is up and running, it should work.  since one switch is 100 and the other is gig, they negotiate at 100

Sorry can you post "show vlan"?

 pls see below..

3550#sh vlan

VLAN database command not working. I am seeing below.

hi,

Can you post "show ip int brief" on both 3550 & 2960?

The show interface trunk command on the third post verifies that VLAN 184 is created and is in forwarding mode.  This is not an issue of the VLAN being defined at the switch level.

I think we need to turn our troubleshooting up to the core level.  Go to the switch where you have defined the default gateway for VLAN 184.  Is VLAN 184 actively working for any other portion of your network?  I could be wrong, but it looks as if VLAN 184 isn't properly defined on this switch.  Assuming this is the issue, consider the following:

1.  Is the SVI for VLAN 184 created and in the up/up state?
2.  Do you have a DCHP scope configured?
3.  Do you have a network statement in your routing protocol defined?

 Hi Procopius..

Yes. vlan 184 is up and working. we have another L2 switches configured on vlan 184 & they are working, also DHCP scope is configured.

One more thing i want to ask you. Do i need to have network statement on my L3 switch(IP routing enabled) to make communication between VLANs(SVI) or only configuring trunk is capable of doing same?

No routing protocol needed for inter-vlan routing when both SVIs are configured on the same switch.  You just need ip routing enabled.  You will need a network statement to communicate to networks beyond that core switch.

I have attached a drawing of your network based upon your description.  Can you please confirm this is correct?  If yes, then I am a little perplexed as to the problem.  Question:  Can other VLANs pass traffic on this new 3550?

Another idea would be to create an SVI for VLAN 184 on your new 3550.  See if you can ping the VLAN 184 default gateway from your 3550.
