3725 unknown port adapter 8T1-IMA

I'm running a 3725 with

Cisco IOS Software, 3700 Software (C3725-IPBASE-M), Version 12.4(25d), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
Cisco 3725 (R7000) processor (revision 0.1) with 244736K/17408K bytes of memory.
R7000 CPU at 240MHz, Implementation 39, Rev 3.3, 256KB L2 Cache
2 FastEthernet interfaces
DRAM configuration is 64 bits wide with parity disabled.
55K bytes of NVRAM.
31360K bytes of ATA System CompactFlash (Read/Write)

and a ATM-T1 8T1-IMA module which gives the error: Unknown (type 189) Port adapter, Port adapter is disabled.

But according to what I read here:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/routers/3700-series-multiservice-access-routers/relevant-interfaces-and-modules.html

I *think* this module should be compatible with a 3725 running > 12.2(8)T. What am I doing wrong?

Could you please attach the output of "show diag"?  I'm thinking of these two tips from here - http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/interfaces-modules/interface-cards/71820-routermodules.html

  • If the module's hardware information is not shown in the show diag, reseat the hardware module. You can also install the module in a different slot. Some modules are not hot swappable; reload the router after you install the module.

  • If the module's hardware information is shown in the show diag but you are not able to see the module interfaces in the show run or show IP interface brief output, check the hardware installation documentation. Some modules need router configuration after the installation.

Also, a quick comparison here - http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/compareImages.jsp - between IP BASE and some other feature set for your IOS version (I chose SP SERVICES) seems to show that IP BASE doesn't support Inverse Multiplexing over ATM (IMA).

This idea came from the fact that this link - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps259/products_data_sheet09186a00801aa726.html - shows that your module is supported on 3725 starting IOS 12.2(8)T with "Any 3700 Cisco IOS Plus feature set" - I just thought that "Plus" for 12.2 means something more than IP BASE for 12.4...

Long story short, I'd try another IOS feature set first :).

here is the show diag:

I'm new to these boxes (come from Juniper), how would I go about getting an IOS Plus image (and how would I know which version I'd need anyway)? This is a very old unit, which is EOL and no longer supported.

Are you simulating over GNS ??

I just loaded GNS3 on Debian and am trying to become familiar with it. I don't know much about it, mostly a command line Linux guy really, but I will try to see what I can learn :)

spent a ton of time compiling 1.3.2 for Debian Jessie (and publishing how I did it, since none of the howto's worked), and in the end the cards I have aren't options to populate in the slots. Also, it's terribly buggy, crashes all the time and looks moderately useless for what I'm attempting to do. It also looks like it supports very few other Cisco models, so I think maybe I'll just learn on the bare metal boxes once I figure out how to transfer .bin's to the box and get it to run them.

Well, using the Feature Navigator (for comparison with the "ipbase" image) and the download section of Cisco's site, I've found that the smallest image that supports IMA is "ipvoice" - the problem is that, for IOS version 12.4, it would just barely fit on your flash (if there's nothing else on it - the output of "dir" might help to determine that);  if it doesn't, you'd probably have to go back to 12.3.

As for getting IOS files for an unsupported platform, I usually google a file's name and find "repositories" with old images for that platform - the "richest" I've found for 3725 is ftp://213.141.145.240/pub/Soft/Cisco/IOS/37xx/3725/ from where I'd pick c3725-ipvoice_ivs-mz.124-25d.bin (if the flash has room for it) or c3725-ipvoice-mz.123-14.T7.bin.  There are also a few 12.4 "c3725-ipvoice" images on 4shared...

Thanks, very helpful, it helps me figure out the Cisco world a little bit better :)

#dir
Directory of flash:/
    1 -rw- 17268264 <no date> c3725-ipbase-mz.124-25d.bin

I'm looking through the available images and documenting as I go so I can learn. I'll have to see if the new image will fit, here's what I have:

30221512 May 12 19:50 c3725-ipvoice_ivs-mz.124-25d.bin

Okay, I upgraded the image to c3725-ipvoice_ivs-mz.124-25d.bin and now when it boots I see:

smart init is sizing iomem
  ID MEMORY_REQ TYPE

0000BD 0X0025178C Eight port T1 Inverse Mux for ATM

and then later:

SETUP: new interface ATM1/2 placed in "shutdown" state
SETUP: new interface ATM1/3 placed in "shutdown" state

SETUP: new interface ATM2/4 placed in "shutdown" state
SETUP: new interface ATM2/5 placed in "shutdown" state
SETUP: new interface ATM2/6 placed in "shutdown" state
SETUP: new interface ATM2/7 placed in "shutdown" state

which I would guess is what I should be seeing? Now I'll try to start configuring them :)
