3750x doesn't boot after upgrade to version15 - Page 3

Due to a problem with POE+ i have tried to upgrade the IOS to Version15.0.2SE2, from 12.2.58. unfortunatly the Switch doesn't boot up anymore. It starts to decompress and install the IOS 2 Times, after the Second try it displays "unable to boot" and the switch goes in Bootloader-mode.

When i look at the version i See that bootloader is still the old version 12.2.58.

It seems that the bootloader doesn't geht upgraded and that's why the Switch can't Boot the new Image.

Is there anything i can do to Upgrade the bootloader seperatly?

It's a 3750X48PF-S

Hey there,

I am having the exact same issue. In my case there is no stack (single switch). I've tried everything imaginable, but I can't upgrade from the original 12.2(55)SE3 release, to any of the 15.X releases. I need to do the upgrade to get support for the 10G module.

here is what I've tried :

I delete the 12.2 image to make space, copy over the new image (tried 5 different 15.x images to make sure) using TFTP, verify the image, set the boot variable to the new image, perform a reload. The image gets loaded twice and then just fails. And then I'm stuck doing a 20 minute xmodem transfer to get the original image back on.

Incredibly frustrated, about ready to throw it out the window

The output of the command "dir" does NOT show any IOS version 15.X. It only shows the original 12.2(55)SE3.

You have so many ways to copy the IOS across. You can use the traditional TFTP or you can use USB thumb drive. One thing though, do NOT copy the BIN file only. Download the TAR file from Cisco. Once you've completed the download of the TAR file, it is IMPORTANT you compare the MD5 hash value of the file you have vs the MD5 hash value found in the Cisco website. They need to match for you to proceed.

Once the MD5 hash values match, use the command "archive download-sw tftp:///filename.tar" to unpack the TAR file into your switch. There are three main reasons why I always recommend everyone to use the "archive" vs "copy", and they are:

1. There are additional files (not the HTML files) that are unpacked that you can't get with "copy";

2. The "archive" command will tell you if the process is successful; and

3. The "archive download-sw" will also change your bootstring/boot variable for you.

Finally, you say you want to use 15.X. I strongly recommend you stick with 15.0(2)SE4. Do NOT attempt to load any other version in the 15.X range or you'll really, really regret it.

sorry, the "dir" command was issued after the recovery, only enough space for one image at a time. I also tried doing the tar file approach, and did the MD5 hash as well, but to no avail (that what I meant by tried everything). I did not try 15.0(2)SE4 specifically, but I did try c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.150-2.SE5.bin , I will give your suggestion a shot as well.

Don't even try this version.

Try the "archive download-sw" and post the complete output. I want to see what error messages you are getting or what issues you run to.

I have faced exactly the same issue:

Moreover I have encounter 5 fails of switches upgrade out of 6 switches tried.

I personally consider it is unlikely to have hardware problems in all 5 switches which prevent to upgrade to IOS 15.2.

Especially taking into account smooth and stable operation of mentioned above switches on IOS 12.2 and IOS 15.0

I am really confused and more over: To be honest I am a bit lost and can't predict the future behavior of production switches upgrade (which is upcoming)
