Hi,

I want to change from bundle mode to install

below is the list of dir flash:

So I want to run the below command

software expand file flash:/cat3k_caa-universalk9ldpe.SPA.03.06.08.E.152-2.E8.bin

before expanding, I want to clean up old files .How can I do that ?

Read the document I created Cisco 3850: IOS-XE/Firmware Upgrade. This error message is covered in the Gotcha section.
It is very easy to fix.

rename flash:packages.conf flash:packages.conf.00-
rename flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9ldpe.SPA.03.06.08.E.152-2.E8.conf flash:packages.conf

Make sure the boot variable string points to "packages.conf" file.
Save the config and reboot.

If I extract the bin file and point to boot variable to packages.conf , still I need to install using the below command

software install file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9ldpe.SPA.03.06.08.E.152-2.E8.bin new force verb on-reboot

The below video shows how to convert from bundle mode to install mode.

Extract the .bin file and points the boot variable to packages.conf to convert from bundle to install mode.

Is it correct?

The command I have provided will extract the package files. You can check by using this simple command: dir flash:*03.06.08*

The previous output to the command "dir" already shows it.

The next thing to do, because of the warning message about the packages.conf file not being re-created, is to manually create one. Again, I have provided the commands to do so.

Next is to make sure the boot variable string is pointing to the packages.conf file.

Finally, if everything is fine, reboot the switch.

means the below 1 and 2 do the same ?

1) "software install file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9ldpe.SPA.03.06.08.E.152-2.E8.bin new force verb on-reboot"

2 ) software expand file flash:/cat3k_caa-universalk9ldpe.SPA.03.06.08.E.152-2.E8.bin

I did the second command. Do i need to run the first command again ?

more flash: packages.conf | begin for NOVA returned nothing.

The first switch has all the configurations like SNMP spanning tree , vlan ,

I had erased the previous configuration from the second switch except VLAN .dat

Oh yes it did. It will say the syntax is incorrect. There is a "space" between the ":" and the word "packages".
