Hello,
I have two 6509-V-E chasis' w/ supervisor 720 models linked over VSS, and both of them fail to initialize past rommon. There is a boot image in bootflash:, however there is no boot variable set.
We have tried to force it to boot using the image, as well as changing the confreg many times. It never goes back to the default router# prompt, it just cycles to rommon. There are crashlogs in bootflash:, but the commands "more" and "show" aren't available in rommon.
Another question is how could both switches fail in the exact same manner? They are on different power sources.
Thank you,

Hi,

If they are connected to 2 different power sources, then the failure may not be related to power issues but rather a bug in the IOS you are running that caused the VSS to crash. Sup 720 comes with an external flash slot. If you can load a version of IOS into a flash card, you may be able to load it from flash. 6509-V-E chassis and sup-720s are very old but if you have support contract on them, you may want to open a ticket with Cisco and RMA the sups.

Console into PRIMARY unit and reboot. Post the entire boot-up process.
If in ROMMON, provide the complete output to the following commands:
set dir <LOCATION OF THE IOS FILES>
