Hello,
A cisco noob here. At home I have a small test lab with a 877, this 877 is connectect with the fa0 to my service provider router. I want to configure a DNS server, but when I do I can ping to a DNS name from my 877 but nog from my client. I hope some of you cisco gurus can help me out?
Here is a sh run and screenshots of the ping commando. (ps. I did enter de commando ip domain lookup)

As you can see from the screenshot I added, I'm pinging the DNS name "laptop" what is refer to in the DNS as (10.0.0.11 client A).

Hello Geoffrey
That because as stated previously the ip host command is locally significant to the router so it will be able to ping the client however this will not be propagated outside that router

Hello Geoffrey
As far as I understand it No - unfortunately not without making the router an DNS server or the options stated previously

Ok.. I think I dont realy understand you... with this config i made the router a dns server isnt it?

Hello
No it's not its performing dns lookups on the IP address you are specifying with the ip dns server x.x.x.x
Please review this csc doc for actual dns server on cisco router

Found it.... When I add this piece of DNS config:
ip host laptop 10.0.0.11
ip host router 10.0.0.254
ip host laptop.geoffrey.nl 10.0.0.11
ip host laptop1.geoffrey 10.0.0.11
ip host laptop2 10.0.0.11
ip host laptop2.x 10.0.0.11
ip host laptop2. 10.0.0.11
ip name-server 8.8.8.8
I get a error with the following command on my client 10.0.0.12:
ping laptop
ping router
ping laptop2
ping laptop2.
I get a good response with the folling command on my client 10.0.0.12:
ping laptop.geoffrey.nl
ping laptop1.geoffrey
ping laptop2.x
obviously you have to config a "text"dot"text" host name... but can someone tell my... Why???
