Being in a new position with an established team, I was following their documentation on upgrading the IOS on a set of 2 C9500 in a stackwise config. Thankfully this was in a lab environment, I came to their step which matches the Cisco docs (linked below) to upgrade the rom-monitor capsule.
Release Notes for Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series Switches, Cisco IOS XE Cupertino 17.9.x
So I entered "Upgrade rom-monitor capsule golden switch active r0" and let it complete.
I missed an or "upgrade rom-monitor capsule golden switch 1 r0" and I also sent this command.
That switch now only boots this far without hanging -
I'm thinking I bricked this switch, but I'm not seeing the difference in the two commands that would cause the switch not to load into ROMMON.

Golden Capsule upgrade is not mandatory.
I do not recommend upgrading the Golden Capsule because Cisco developers do not test the firmware. If a Golden Capsule bricks the switch, the switch will need to be RMAed.
Have a look at the attached file. I have developed another way to upgrade a standalone and a VSS pair of 9500.
