Signal conversion is less and less common as more and more signal is transported digitally.
We usually saw this when telephone network was used as transport network for digital signal, as you may know, telephone lines use analog signal.
Today's modem is much more a media converter then a analog/digital converter.
The need for conversion is quite simple. Computers only understand digital signal.
