Hi,

I have a router with 3 gig interfaces and 1 serial interface. I want to know the procedure to assign encapsulation type for serial intrerface. By default the encapsulation type the gig interfaces are showing is ARPA.

Thanks in advance,

Manisha

Hi,

I didn;t understand requirement. just stating what i understood

ARPA is default for physical ethernet interface. if you create logical interface (sub-interface) it will change as per the configuration

like

interface GigabitEthernet4/0.20
encapsulation dot1Q 20

GigabitEthernet4/0.20 is up, line protocol is up
Encapsulation 802.1Q Virtual LAN, Vlan ID  20.

For serial interface default is HDLC on cisco router but you can change it to ppp by command line

encapsulation ppp

Please let us know what exactly you are looking for

Regards

Mahesh

Sorry for confusion.

I meant to set encapsulation type for gig interfaces. There is no command to set encapsulation for gig interfaces. Is it that we have to create sub interface to set encapsulation type for gig interfaces.

Please suggest.

Thanks,

Manisha

Hi,

Gig interfaces are ethernet so default encapsulation is ARPA and if you create subinterfaces then the encapsulation will be ISL or dot1q.

Regards.

Alain.

Hi manisha,

Thanks for clarification. The option is not there because it is not required to do that.(default is ARPA)

For ethernet encapsulation required to encapsulate vlan packets.

So if you have configured vlan 101 the typical command should be "encapsulation dot1q 101"
