C3850 ios update fail

After ios upgrade I have 

Chassis is declared incompatible

FAILED: Version '16.09.02' mismatch with Active's running version '16.06.04' for package: 'guestshell'

ios not accessible

How did you perform the upgrade what commands and what file type was it .bin ?
what mode were you in install mode or bundle mode ?

request platform software package install switch all file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.09.02.SPA.bin

Can you provide some more information :

how many switches in the stack ? what is the current version running(show ver) ?

cabled four switches but ios update was done only for one, not the whole stack

previous version was Denali 16.03.07

Force the switch to load the correct IOS in Bundle mode.
Once in Bundle Mode, unpack the BIN file using the expand option.

The solution was to disconnect the stack cable and over ROMMON flash a new IOS

Was not sure is the objective to upgrade all the switches in stack ? or only 1 ?

if the Object to upgrade all the switches in the Stack : below simple steps (done many times no issues reported)

1. copy the Image to USB from your Laptop

2. Plug the USB to Switch 1( where the master one) check the image

dir usbflash0:

3. copy the New Image to  Flash

copy usbflash0:new-image.bin flash:

4.#verify /md5 flash:new-image .bin

5.install and reload

#software install file flash:new-image.bin switch 1-x (x is a number of switches int the stack) new force

6. reload when it asked to reload.

it will take 30-50min full process. so be patient.

I think you need to try this: You need to bring all switches in the stack on the same mode, either install or bundle mode.

To change from Bundle to install following command you can try. 

#request platform software package install switch all file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.09.02.SPA.bin auto-copy

#conf t
no boot sys
boot sys bootflash:packages.conf
end
wr

#install add file bootflash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.09.02.SPA.bin activate commit
