I have a C6800IA-48FPD that I'm trying to get POE to work on but its not turning on. Any ideas?

FEX-0(config)#interface Gi3/0/1
FEX-0(config-if)#power in
FEX-0(config-if)#power inline a
FEX-0(config-if)#power inline auto
FEX-0(config-if)#end

FEX-0#sh power inline

6800IA is a child switch.
A 6880, 6807 or a 6840X is required to manage the configuration of the child switch.

Without the parent, the IA switch will not function.

Not enough power.

Look at the 2nd column, Available.  It says 740 watts.  This translates to a single 750w power supply.  This is, maybe, just enough to power the hardware and 0 watts power left to do any PoE work.

And the switch is a 48 port FPD variety.  So this means it needs, a minimum, 1000 watt power supply.

Hey Leo thanks for the answer but I have a C6800IA-48FPD not the 48FPDR version with the removable PSU in the back as mine are internal. I went over the data sheet again and it says "Cisco Catalyst 6800ia switches support both IEEE 802.3af PoE and IEEE 802.3at PoE+ (up to 30W per port) to deliver lower total cost of ownership for deployments that incorporate Cisco IP phones, etc" so I should have PoE? I tried to connect a phone and PoE tester after allowing for inline power and it still doesn't provide PoE. When I press the mode button and cycle to PoE all the ports light up orange/amber but for some reason it won't allow for inline power.

Thanks for the help!

Ok, let me go back to "basics".

Post the complete output to the following commands:

  1. sh version
  2. sh log
  3. sh post (not sure if this command will work)

Wait a second ... Is this a stand-alone switch or does this have a "parent"?

It's a stand alone switch, I'm guessing it needs to be connected to Catalyst 6500/6800 for the PoE to work?
