cisco 2960x switch renumber

How do i renumber a switch ie   when there is an existing switch 3 in the stack?  Do i have to un-provision switch 3 and 4 and reconfigure ?

I tried the following below and rebooted but it did not work.

conf t

switch 4 renumber 3

exit

reload

<1-8> New switch number

Yes that is the way to renumber a switch and reboot it to take effect. 

Have you tried this command first to remove the provisioned switch:

no switch <number> provision

and also:

reload slot <slot id>

you have to renumber the exisiting switch 3 to a different number like say 5 then renumber 4 to 3 then then "5" to 4 you cannot renumber a switch to an existing switch number.
