Cisco 3560v2 Gigabit Help

KB1018

Newbie Question: I just bought a 48 port 3560v2 switch for my home network and are a bit new to Cisco. I understand that my 48 fast ethernet ports can only be 100mbps speed tops. My question is if I get an SFP module to allow an RJ45 at 1 gig, can this somehow apply to all fast ethernet ports or will it just be that SFP port that can run a gig? If that's the case, is there an alternative to get everything running at my ISP 400 download speed, or am I stuck at just those 4 SFP ports? I do not have a fiber connection, just ethernet. Last ISP download speed off switch - 90 down, 23up...off router only, no switch - 472 down, 23 up.

Thanks,

Hi,

you can connect 1G copper SFP to 3560 switches. (check with transceiver matrix for compatibility with exact model you have) for ex. https://tmgmatrix.cisco.com/?tpid=141&npid=459&npid=457&npid=458

that will give 1G speed. but all copper ports are 100Mbps and thats maximum.

Please rate this and mark as solution/answer, if this resolved your issue

Hi

Those fast ethernet port with RJ45 connector only works at 100 Mbps and nothing more. Those port with SFP option, can work at 1Giga. If you dont have Fiber, you can use a Cat5 or Cat6 ethernet cable and you are going to achieve 1Giga same way.

If your ISP provides you with 400 Mbps, then, if you connect a PC in one of Fast Ethernet port, you are going to get 100 Mbps top on that PC, you already know that.

For gig, you're "stuck" with using your SFP ports.  Although, as noted by @Kasun Bandara, (also true, it appears, for 3560v2), a copper SFP can be used.

Your FE copper ports are only 10/100 capable, although you can Etherchannel them, with some other equipment.
