CISCO 4507R-E Switch

KESHAV METHI

Hi,

We are using CISCO 4507R-E switch as our core/distribution switch. Out of the 7 available slots, 3 are currently being used. Descriptions is as follows:

Slot 1: 6 Port Fiber Line Card

Slot 2: 6 Port Fiber Line Card

       Slot 3: Supervisor Engine

       Slot 4: Empty

Slot 5: 48 Port Copper Line Card

       Slot 6: Empty

       Slot 7: Empty

We want to add extra 10 Gbps fiber links (approximately 12) using slot 6 and 7.

Kindly advise if the CISCO 4507R-E can support additional 10 Gbps links.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Keshav

You can use all 12 Port on a 4712 card, as long you can live with the oversubscription.

But yes, if you have 4 or more constant 10 Gigabit streams will this only work with 4 ports on one 4712 line card.

2:1 or 2.5:1 is an acceptable value for uplinks to user access switches

For server or blade switches it depends by the applications

The 4500 series will support VSS with Sup7E and Sup7LE.

A first Phase support ONLY 47XX Line Cards and not with all options.

Cisco expects that a first limited VSS version will be available during Q4CY12.

Later on a second phase during CY13 will also some classic 45XX line cards usable but not for VSL Links and with additional function or possibilities.

Andy

Hello Keshav

As far as I experienced cisco never write clear numbers or similar studies.

But 2:1 is well for most users and can go up to 4:1

Cisco say for first VSS version has both chassis to absolute identical

  • same chassis type
  • same supervisor
  • same line cards

But think also that the C4507R and C4510R Chassis can carry two Supervisors in hot standby mode.

This means is the first Supervisor fails, the second take over without interrupt a session, even phone calls continues without noise or interruption.

All our tests never lost a single packet even, if we remove a supervisor on the hardest way physical out from the chassis.

Our welcome if you have more questions.

Andy

Good afternoon KESHAV METHI

This type of switch is modular, so you can add ports (modules), Here I  leave a web page  where you can see the product specifications and  see which links supports.

Thanks for using our forum

I hope you find this answer useful, if it was satisfactory  for you, please mark the question as Answered.

Hello

You don’t say witch sup you use but you have to know and change several things:

Only a Sup 7E or 7LE support a WS-X4512 Line Card with 12 SFP+ 10GE or 1GE SFP Ports.

To reach the availability to use 10GE you need to change the following:

The chassis has to be 4506E, 4707RplusE or 4710RplusE.

Please note: the plus sign in the chassis name, the minus chassis version will not work with any sup7

On a Sup7E you get 4 Ports with SFP+ 10GE or on Sup7LE you get 2 Ports with SFP+ 10GE.

All with true wire speed.

But the port numbers as counted per chassis, if you have two sups in chassis you can only the half ports use.

The internal or backplane organization between a sup 7E and a 4712 Line card use 8 Channel with each 6 Gbps, total 48Gbps per each slot.

The Ports on the 4712 are bundled in 4 groups of 3 ports.

To transfer data between sup and line card use each group 2 channels with each 6 Gbps, total 12 Gbps.

With one port used with 10GE and two port 1GE in group you have wire speed.

With 3 ports 10GE you have a oversubscription of 2.5 to 1.

And you need IOS IP Service or Enterprise.

Andy

Thank you Miranda and Andy.

It seems that we will have to upgrade the chassis and supervisor to be able to use 4712 line card.

Please advise:

  1. If we use 4707RplusE chassis and sup 7E, we would be able to use only 4 ports with 10GE speed per 4712 line card and we would need 3 such line cards?
  2. Does 4500 also support VSS? does that require additional line cards?

Hello Andy,

I really appreciate your quick responses.

Is there any standard/guide available from CISCO for the oversubcription ratio(pardon my limited knowledge)?

In order to make the 4507RplusE Redundant, is providing another 4507 RplusE as standby only option? Should that be done using 4712 line cards?
