Cisco 6500E VSS quad supervisor 2t in different IOS Image

Hi,

I have two chassis C6509E in each one has two sup-2t with IOS Image "SPA.151-1.SY", as we know this image not supported to quad supervisors that mean I have only two supervisors are working now and the others are down, my plan to upgrade the IOS image to SY5, my question is if I upgrade the IOS image for the supervisors which are working now to SY5 the other supervisor will be up and work but in different IOS image this will effect the VSS that mean VSS will not work? what is the proper procedure the enable quad supervisor in both chassis.

Thanks

Hi,

Is your image SY or SY1?

According to this link SY1 supports quad sup.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/15-1SY/config_guide/sup2T/15_1_sy_swcg_2T/virtual_switching_systems.html

I have never done it, but I think if you upgrade the working sups first and bring up VSS and than manually upgrade the other 2 sups and reboot them it should work.  Remember for this you need a pretty long outage window to reboot the chassis. You also want to change some of your VSL cabling.  See link above.

Hi Reza,

The current IOS image is "s2t54-advipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY.bin" and my plan to upgrade to SY5 because the current image not supported Quad,

just I want know if I upgrade the working sups and bring up VSS and insert the new sup the VSS will be up or will be down, my concern maybe redundancy mode will be RBR, do you have idea about this ?

Thanks for you cooperation.

Hi,

No one have idea ?

Thanks

Hi All,

Thanks for your feedback, ISSU not supported I will do FSU, how can copy the IOS image for all supervisor because the other supervisor down because current image not supported quad

below show module:

  1    8  DCEF2T 8 port 10GE                     WS-X6908-10G       SAL1637ML2Z
  3   48  CEF720 48 port 10/100/1000mb Ethernet  WS-X6848-GE-TX     SAL1803KN4T

6    0  Unknown (Other)                        Unknown            Unknown

Check this:-

Copy image in all sup’s and confirm image is present on Standby switch

#remote command switch-id 2 module 5 dir

Directory of bootdisk:/

    2  -rw-    85875056  Aug 14 2013 20:11:20 -04:00  s2t54-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.150-1.SY4.bin

#remote command switch-id 2 module 6 dir

Directory of bootdisk:/

Verify image integrity

verify /md5 sw1-slot5-bootdisk:s2t54-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-2.SY4a.bin

verify /md5 sw1-slot6-bootdisk:s2t54-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-2.SY4a.bin

verify /md5 sw2-slot5-bootdisk:s2t54-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-2.SY4a.bin

verify /md5 sw2-slot6-bootdisk:s2t54-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-2.SY4a.bin

Set boot var

conf t

no boot system flash

boot system flash bootdisk:s2t54-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-2.SY4a.bin

boot system flash bootdisk:s2t54-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.151-1.SY1.bin   //Secondary image

end

Check bootvar on Standby switch

#remote command switch-id 2 module 5 sh bootvar

#remote command switch-id 2 module 6 sh bootvar

# redundancy reload peer

Once peer came into rpr mode, reloaded active switch

# redundancy reload shelf

Also you can think of doing ISSU which would be easier way.

But as Reza said kindly do this activity during the MW to avoid any risk.
