Cisco 6509 goes in rommon on reboot

Hi everyone,

I am facing a problem with a cisco 6509 that goes into rommon every time i restart. If i give the command

rommon 1> boot

it will pick up the IOS on the sup-bootdisk: or bootdisk: and boots up but i dont understand why on reboot it wont pick up this IOS and boot itself and why do i have to write boot command everytime on rommon.

I have also explicitly given the command "boot system bootdisk:IOSNAME.bin" in the startup config file but still no luck.

Please advice for what i should do....

Thank you for the great post,

I also have the same problem and now I know where to trouble shoot and fix the problem,

Will post if it does not work !!

Sorry Alfred but my problem was resolved by none of the above I tried everything and it may have worked after all but nothing really got it working until i actually took out the fan tray slot gave a nice air-blow to the fan tray and inside the switch. As per my knowledge the people taking care of it now do it on regular basis since its not layen in a clean air.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

It should be 2102. Can you try setting it again on the RP and then save the config and rerun the 'remote command switch show bootvar' command. If it shows 0x2102 at next reload then I believe it should fix it. I dont exactly recall how I fixed it but I am sure if this is not the correct way someone else will provide you with the exact answer :- ).

Dear All,

I am facing problem when  I  am booting  cisco 6503 switch with sup720 , it is going to rommon mode. But when i giving command(boot) on rommon mode, it boot automatically.

But  when i am giving sh bootvar  command after going to  enable mode ,It showing below information .

Router#sh bootvar

BOOT variable = sup-bootflash:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXJ1.bin,1;

CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist

BOOTLDR variable = sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXJ1.bin

Configuration register is 0x2102

Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem to boot normally after reload.

It would be higly appreciated if you reply soon.

Thanks and regards

Erfan

Hi.

I´d never find the origin of this problem. and I replace de superviser card in the switch. I think was a hardware problem. I make a lot of change in the configuration before of the replace the supervisor. but always booted in rommon.

Kindly get the output of :

remote command switch sh bootvar

Hi ,

Thanks for your update. For your information "remote command switch sh bootvar" is not working .When I am trying to provide above command from prevelige mode , it showing below output:

Router#remote com
Router#remote command ?
module      Remote command execution module
standby-rp  Remote command execution standby-rp
standby-sp  Remote command execution standby-sp
switch      Remote command execution switch

Router#remote command sw
Router#remote command switch ?
LINE  Remote command string

But I have given config-register 0x2102 command and save and reload .After that it was booting normally without going to rommon mode.

Can any one  tell me why  " remote command switch sh bootvar " is not working from prevelige mode.

Thanks and regards

Erfan
