Hi,
We have a Cisco Aironet 1242 AG Series which we are trying to setup. The DHCP assigns the IP address, but we cannot connect to it. We have had this problem with a previous Aironet unit, which this new one we have got now is also having the same problem!
Everything seems to be correct, but we cannot get to the IP address to set it up. Can anyone help please?
Thanks, Richard

When you say you "can't connect" to it, do you mean you can't ping the IP, telnet into the device, or web into it?
First, can you ping the device?

I can ping the IP address, but when connecting on the web browser it doesn't find the page. I need to get to this to set the wireless point up.
Thanks, Richard.

Can you telnet to it? If so, login and post "sh flash"

I can't. When I try to connect to the IP address with Telnet I get the message 'Password required, but none set'.
Sorry if I am being dumb, but I am a bit of a newbie to this!

No worries. Sorry for the late response. You can console into it, but you'll need a rollover cable (light blue with rj45 connector on one end and 9 pin d-connector on the other). You connect it to your serial port on a laptop/desktop and then connect using putty or some terminal program to the com port. You'll have to get at least that far if you can't get into the AP by any other means.

John

Okay, so I'm assuming you were able to get to the console via a cable?
If so, can you post a couple of things for me?
"show run"
"sh ver"
Thanks!

Okay, here's the first issue I see:
cisco AIR-LAP1242AG-E-K9
This is configured as an LWAP (Lightweight access point) that requires a WLC (wireless lan controller) in order to manage them. Do you have one of those? If not, then you can download the IOS to convert the AP from lightweight to autonomous and then you'll be able to get into your web page.
HTH,
John

Hi John,
Unfortunately we don't have a WLC. We also don't have a Cisco Support Contract for this switch, meaning I can't download the IOS. Is there anything I can do?
Thanks,
Richard
10-11-2012 08:44 AM
Unfortunately no. You may be able to get in touch with Cisco to see if you can purchase the IOS without a contract.

Hi John,
Thanks a lot for your help, it is much appreciated. I will try and see if I can get the IOS without a support contract.
