Hi All,
Need your support for the below case, while doing new connectivity on CISCO ASR920 I observed an abnormal behavior like
1- New fiber cable connected to one port and physically it is showing up and green but when i login to the router i found the interface status still showing down... SFP changed still no change
2- Another port was up and green but no traffic on that port so we removed the cable and SFP then we checked the interface status still showing up.. we shut and no shut the interface then the interface status changed to Down
3- We did a direct loop on the interface but the interface status still showing down
as per the above deferent scenario we want to figure out the root cause for the abnormal behavior. this is due to [ hanging issue, software upgrade or license issue...]
below is the router information
Cisco IOS XE Software, Version 03.16.02a.S - Extended Support Release

Can you post the below information of that port
show run interface gigx/x
show interface gigx/x
what is other side conected ?
show logging, when you insert the SFP and remove the SFP ? (what SFP is this ?) model ?

try both the side :
interface GigabitEthernet0/0/15
no negotiation auto
09-06-2022 02:38 PM
it doesn't work
even if the negotiation auto is configured and did a direct loop, the router should detect it
another point i remembered it. why it showing nothing for that command "sh hw-module subslot 0/0 transceiver 15 status"
09-06-2022 04:53 PM
before you connect Long haul fiber, do you have any MM SFP to test to see if the ports are ok ?
check the modules use below the reference guide :
09-07-2022 05:51 AM
i didn't try MM SFP, last visit we only have Single mode
09-06-2022 10:04 AM
- Disable auto negotiation on the interface configuration , check if that can help.

Thanks Marce for your kind reply. i tried it but it doesn't work
even if the negotiation auto is configured and did a direct loop, the router should detect it. am i right?
another point i remembered it. why it showing nothing for that command "sh hw-module subslot 0/0 transceiver 15 status"

- Try latest software version available for the ASR920 , one reason for mentioning is https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/field-notices/639/fn63944.html , not sure if this is a 'direct hit' however but it remains good practice to try and or test latest software.

thanks for your help. i will check the latest software version

You probably have done this before, but I got to ask anyway, have you tried replacing SFP with another one? You can also “loopback” by joining the rx & tx of the sfp and see if it router detects it as interface is up or not.
when you run the show hw-module subslot 0/0 transceiver 15 status, it should give you rx/tx reading.
09-07-2022 03:50 AM
SFP changed actually with a spare part and with another used port was connected to the router
this command didn't show anything
all your concerns done before and i mentioned it above
thanks for your help
