Hello.
I am asking this question because I was not able to find any document from Cisco related to preventive maintenance procedures or recommendations for all their products.
Does any body know about this?. People could perform any procedure for this purpose, but I really would like to know if CISCO recommends the use of preventive maintenance on their products and the recommended procedure for it?
Thanks in advanced for the help.

Hello Gilberto,
there are no real recommendations for preventive maintenance, as the life cycle of a device depends on too many variables (utilization, environment temperature, etc.). What you could check for is Mean time between failures (MTBF), which is the predicted (average) time between failures of a system during operation. Cisco usually has that available on their website...

Hi,
As Georg also noted, there is no official documentation for maintenance. You can for example upgrade 2, 3 or 4 times a year or if things are running with no issues or you don't need any specific feature, than there is no need to rush and upgrade. So, it is all up to you but if things are running smoothly, no need to upgrade.

I always find opportunity to reboot Cisco appliances once a year.
One of the network I manage have an uptime >1 year. I sometimes can see some strange things happening with this network.
I also try to upgrade the IOS if I could just to stay ahead.

Hello,
Our company performs periodic device disassembly and dust removal, which is especially important when operating devices outside of clean data centres. During time, dust covers electronic parts, creating barrier which is blocking proper heat transfer between the parts and cooling air. By performing controlled shut-down/ cold-start of device, you should detect worn power supplies and other components and resolve their outage within planned window. You should also clean optical equipment using proper tools.
I would also strongly recommend to install and operate devices according to Cisco "Hardware Installation Guide", especially "Technical Specifications" part. You must also respect "Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information". This is a basis.
Regards
Stepan
