Cisco WS-C2960X-48TS-L to HP-2530-24G trunk port not working.

Hello team,

We are struggling with our Cisco WS-C2960X-48TS-L and HP-2530-24G.
HP-2530-24G having four SFP 25-28.
We connected 2960X Port 51 to HP-2530's port 27.
On Cisco switch we configured multiple VLANs i.e. VLAN 10,20,30,60,80.
On HP switch we need only two VLANs 30 and 80, so we configured accordingly, port 27 is tagged under both VLANs.
Cisco port 51 is an access port and we passed vlan 30 on that port, everything working well in this scenario.

But as per our requirement we need VLAN 80 too on HP switch, so the issue is whenever we convert Cisco port 51 to trunk , the link between cisco and HP drops, we lose access to HP switch and devices behind that switch.

can someone help on this ?
Thanks

Hi @neeraj_dabas

Seems to me like a Spanning-tree problem.  It seems you are causing a loop on the switch and this can explain the crash.

Thanks for the quick reply @Flavio Miranda .
Can you please explain a little bit more about the issue, and some troubleshooting steps to resolve this, I will appreciate your efforts.

@neeraj_dabas , check the logs on the switch that might have some information about what happens when you connect both switches in trunk.

if possible you share the logs here it would be great

Hi @neeraj_dabas was those logs collected while the port was in trunk?

You are running spanning-tree MST on cisco side, which spanning-tree are you running on the other side?

It can be spanning-tree mismatch.

"Hi @neeraj_dabas was those logs collected while the port was in trunk?"
Yes
On HP side no STP is enabled.

issue is same, after making port 51 trunk hp switch gone.
but status of port 51 is FWD and no port is blocked on cisco switch, please correct me if I misunderstood something.

One more point -
On same cisco switch we had port 52 already configured as trunk port and nothing is connected on that port, so we tried to connect HP switch to port 52 instead of port 51, but still result is same.

@neeraj_dabas

“On HP switch we need only two VLANs 30 and 80, so we configured accordingly, port 27 is tagged under both VLANs. Cisco port 51 is an access port and we passed vlan 30 on that port, everything working well in this scenario.”

I wonder how exactly you have run that test? Also, was Port 27 still untagged in VLAN 1? That’s a default setting. If Port 51 was an access port in VLAN 30, traffic coming out of it would be untagged and it would be the VID of Port 27 that would tell the HP switch which VLAN the traffic belonged to. So, what’s that VID and, again, how exactly did you run that test?

“But as per our requirement we need VLAN 80 too on HP switch, so the issue is whenever we convert Cisco port 51 to trunk , the link between cisco and HP drops, we lose access to HP switch and devices behind that switch.”

If the configuration of a trunk port is not additionally modified, the port is a member of all VLANs and it is tagged in all VLANs except for the native VLAN where it is untagged. If neither VLAN 30 or 80 are native on that CISCO switch, their traffic leaving the switch would be tagged with corresponding VIDs and the HP switch should have no issue with placing it in the correct VLAN and sending it to devices connected to it. If that does not work with Port 27 configured as you described, there may be some issue with the VLAN configuration of the ports those devices are connected to. I wonder how did you configure them?

Kris K

Yes Port 27 on HP switch is untagged in VLAN 1, as it's a default setting.
Port 1-20, 23-28  Untagged in VLAN 1
Port 21-22 Untagged in VLAN 80
Port 27 tagged in VLAN 30, 80

STP is disabled on HP switch.

-- On Cisco port 51 is access port under vlan 30 as of now, we need to make it trunk, but when we change it's mode , we lose hp switch but status of 51 is FWD when I checked by "sh spanning-tree interface g1/0/51"

No. of blockedports are also 0, checked by - sh spanning-tree blockedports
These all steps are executed when 51 is an trunk port.

Hello @neeraj_dabas ,

check on HP switch on which VLAN you have configured the management IP address I suspect it is configured under Vlan 1 and if this is true this is the reason why when you change from mode access vlan 30 to mode trunk on Cisco side you are losing the HP switch.

In access mode you can have a mismatch on VLANs used on the two sides, in trunk mode both sides must agree on what VLANs are allowed on the trunk,  and what is the native VLAN.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hello @Giuseppe Larosa thanks, yes you are correct we configured IP address on VLAN1 only, now I assign IP address to VLAN 30 also but this will also not working, after changing from access vlan 30 to trunk on cisco side we neither able to access from vlan 1 IP nor by VLAN 30 IP address.
Vlan 1 is native VLAN for both cisco and hp.
