cisco WS-C4507R with V-10GE

Hi,

I have a 4507R with dual WS-X4516-10GE in SSO mode with IOS cat4000-i9s-mz.122-25.EWA10. Each card is using a 10G interface.

The problem is when I try to use the 2nd 10Gb interface, I get the following message:

% WARNING: Interface TenGigabitEthernet1/2 is usable/operational in tengigabit
% uplink configuration when only one supervisor is present in in the chassis
% in slot 1.

According to cisco documentation, in redundant mode, each supervisor card can't use 2x10Gb at the same time.

I was wondering if this is still current no matter what, or if an IOS upgrade will fix this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Vincent.

Unless you are using Sup7E, I wouldn't bother with a 2nd active 10Gb.

  • Thanks for you reply.
  • Does this mean there is nothing I can do with my current hardware to get the use of the 2nd 10Gb port? (unless I breack the redundancy of course).

Let me explain a bit further (how rude of me not to!):

The 4500R chassis when coupled with Sup6E, for example, has a 6Gb backplane slot speed.  The 6Gb speed is calculated on HALF Duplex.

4500R-E has a backplane of 24 Gb.

However, if you have the newer Sup7E and you insert it into a 4507R+E chassis, this means you can ramp up your backplane to 48Gb half duplex.

Thanks for all you details. Much appreciated.

Hi Vincent,

I'm sorry to dump you with all these bad news.  I just don't want someone to blame you for doing all of these 10Gb links and you can't see full 10Gb runs.

I appreciate your concern. This is now for my company to decide to upgrade or not.

Hi,

First for sure, if you have redundant supervisor engine you cannot use both tengig ports of single sup.

In Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(25)SG and later on a Catalyst 4507R Series Switch, 10GE and GE uplinks are concurrently usable on the Supervisor Engine V-10GE (WS-X4516-10GE). In Cisco IOS Software Releases earlier than 12.2(25)SG, you need to issue the hw-module uplink select configuration command to select either the 10GE or GE uplinks.

Check below link to see the possible combinations you can use.

Thanks for the precision.

I am only using the 10Gb ports on the supervisors. So, this confirm that only 1 x 10Gb interface per sup is available to use.
