We have a Catalyst 4506 (Sup V) and Catalyst 6509(Enhanced), both with 10GB ports capability.
Since we bought them we haven't been able to connect both 10GB ports properly between two buildings. Both transceivers are X2-10GB-LR. Now, we are trying to connect them directly from one switch to the other using duplex singlemode fiber patch cable, with SC ends. But it is not working, do we need special fiber optic cable?
I'll appreciate any ideas, thanks!

Do you get a link light when they are connected? If not, have you made sure to cross the strands, so that the tx on the 4506 goes to the rx on the 6509, and vice versa?
can you attach the output of "show run interface tengigX/X" from each switch, and "show interface tengigX/X" as well?

1) No, I don't get any link lights. Yes, I have crossed the strands but nothing.
2) Here is the sh run int te 1/1 for the 4506 :
1109core#sh run int te 1/1

3) Here is the sh run int te 1/1 for the 6509 :

4) Here is the sh int te1/1 for 4506:

First, verify that the modules are compatible on both ends (LX module <=> LX module). Then, reseat the 10Gb module on the 6509. It doesn't seem to be getting recognized on the 6500. The "media type" description should not be missing in the "show interface" output. Also, check that IOS version as well, to make sure it has no issues with the module.

Maria. You are missing the "switchport" coomand by itself on the "te 1/1" interface of your 1109core:
1109core#sh run int te 1/1
Building configuration...
Current configuration : 126 bytes
!
interface TenGigabitEthernet1/1
description link to 6509
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
end
It should be:
interface TenGigabitEthernet1/1
description link to 6509
switchport
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
end
Does this make any difference?

Hmm. Seems like it could be an issue with the transcievers or the ports. the sh int command should show you the transciever if everything is working properly. For example, below I've pasted the output from a working 10Gb port on my network:
TenGigabitEthernet6/1 is up, line protocol is up (connected)

Note the part that I boldfaced. Because yours isn't listing a media type, it's possible that there is something wrong with the hardware. Have you tried re-seating the X2, or moving it to a different port?
06-14-2011 08:41 AM
Also, it seems the issue is on your 6509 side. Everything looks good on the 4506
06-14-2011 09:08 AM
I tried to put the X2 back in the same port but nothing, then I changed to another port (te1/4) but I'm not getting any media type.
I'll look but I don't think we have any more X2 but if both X2 work properly, a regular single mode fiber optic cable should work with it?
Thank you so much !

Assuming both X2's are in proper working order, and the module on the 4506 is working properly, yes, a standard singlemode patch cable should work just fine.
Since the 6509 looks good, you could take the X2 from the 4506, plug it in in the 6509 and see if you get a media type. If you do, then you know that there seems to be an issue with the module on the 4506

Can you post a show int status so we can see what the ports look like. Also what 10 gig modules are you using on each side ?

Hi!
Well, I honestly do not think a MM fiber would work with SM fiber connector in between.
Regards!
