Hi
I have very little experience with optical gbics and i am wondering if i can connect a remote location (10 miles away ) with Cisco 1000BASE-LX/LH SFP gbics over dark fiber without a cwdm solution.
I want to build this link from a 6509 to a 3750 switch. From what i ve read it should be possible, but i am wondering if both the 3750 and 6509 switches are supporting this.
Thanks in advance!!

No, you shouldn't need a CWDM (or DWDM) SPF unless you need more than 1 gig across the same fiber.
The distance, though, for a LX/LH is greater than spec. The Cisco spec for those SPFs is 10 Km (see Table 1 in
The EX SPF should do the distance, but unsure you'll find one supported for both the 3750 and 6509. (NB: use
5-dB attenuator for back-to-back.) See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6981.html
If not, the ZX SPF will work although for 10 miles you may need an attenuator .
"The minimum link distance for ZX GBICs is 6.2 miles (10 km) with an 8-dB attenuator installed at each end of the link. Without attenuators, the minimum link distance is 24.9 miles (40 km)."
and
"When shorter lengths of single-mode fiber are used, it may be necessary to insert an inline optical attenuator in the link to avoid overloading the receiver. Use the following guidelines:
•Insert a 10-dB inline optical attenuator between the fiber-optic cable plant and the receiving port on the 1000BASE-ZX module at each end of the link whenever the fiber-optic cable span is less than 15.5 miles (25 km).
•Insert a 5-dB inline optical attenuator between the fiber-optic cable plant and the receiving port on the 1000BASE-ZX module at each end of the link whenever the fiber-optic cable span is equal to or greater than 15.5 miles (25 km) but less than 31 miles (50 km). "

The 3750/3750G/3750E/3750X will support GLC-LH.

Hi, Joseph, thanks a lot for you reply.
The distance is going to be 7,2 kilometers, i just heard.
So the LX/LH could do the trick then i guess. (I dont need more than 1 gig)
But i ve read that only the 3750-E are supported in the 3750 series for these Gbic;s, which could mean the 3750 is not?

The 3750/3750G/3750E/3750X will support GLC-LH.
