Hey Guys,
I have been asked to troubleshoot an issue where information that is being copy and pasted to a new switch is getting garbled. This only happens if a lot of information is sent to the switch at once and it might only happen on a line or two. After a little digging into the switch I found that the switch by default is set to use 2 StopBits and not the default of 1. Please see below for my output of show terminal.
Switch#show terminal

Allowed output transports are telnet ssh.
Preferred transport is telnet.

It is like this on two different switches I have looked at. I can't assume it is supposed to be like this. I assume it should be set at 1 when it comes direct from the factory.
Please see below for my version. Could this be a bug?

I am looking into if we have any agreements with Cisco so I can open up a TAC case. Not sure of that yet. I just wanted to see if anyone on here could point me in the right direction. Maybe i'm totally off but it just doesn't seem right that information gets garbled when copying and pasting to a switch. Esspecially when it is very inconsistent. Also note I am using the default Cisco settings when I connect to the switch and have tried with both Putty and Teraterm Pro.
Thanks in advance, Elton

Elton,
Interestingly enough, I've looked at the console on a 3745 and a 2811 and they both are set to 2 stop bits.

I've not changed any of these and they are default. I wonder if you were to change the stopbit on yours to 1 if it would help your issue. As a side note, you may want to ensure that you don't have flow control set on your serial connection either. You'll also want to ensure that you have your baud rate set the same as the switch which is 9600.
HTH,
John

Very weird. I have read some things from Cisco online and it says that the stop bit is defaulted to 2. I still can't find much information on it to confirm.

Maybe only a work around but what if you telnet to it and paste your config in via telnet..
If there is no config
Add a ip on vlan 1
give a enable PW
and VTY PW
then plug in with a laptop and telnet in.

The problem is there aren't our switches. We do batches of them for customers based on their configuration files. Some lines are getting left out as they get corrupted as they get pasted into the switch. I just assumed it was a terminal mismatch as I have seen weird things happen like this when it's entered too fast or when both sides don't match.
Can anyone else confirm their switches are also set to 2 stopbits. It it is truly the default I will move on and try to find another answer.

I have had this issue when pasting too much config..
Have you tried pasting half the config at once? Or less?
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_3/configfun/command/reference/cfr_1g12.html#wp1030481
From what i see stop bits is default to 2
What happens when you set it to 1?
