directly connecting laptop to pc

Hi all,

I have a laptop running window 8.1

I have a pc running window server 2012 r2 (without hyper-v)

I am using a straight cable cat 5e (both side 568b)

I checked my pc ethernet card -> it is using realtek family controller RTL8168E

I go to the website, on the features it states -
Crossover Detection & Auto-Correction

q1) Does the crossover detection and auto correction here means auto-mdix

Both the ethernet card duplex and speed are set to Auto

However, the connected speed is only 100Mbps.

================================================================

Then I use my straight cable to connect to the laptop to the pc.

Now on the laptop, under the ethernet adaptor settings

I set my ip to be 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0

I set my gateway as 192.168.0.3

On my pc, under the ethernet adaptor settings

I set my ip to be 192.168.0.3 255.255.255.0

i set my gateway as 192.168.02

================================================================

The connection on the 2 computer remains limited and i not able to ping to one another.

What could be wrong  ? Did I miss out anything.  I have also tried leaving the gateway empty, but result is still the same.

Regards.

I believe Crossover Detection & Auto-Correction is mdix.  However both sides need to be mdix, if only one side is mdix, a crossover cable should be used.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cehill,

I went to brought a crosscable today and it doesnt work.

So I went ahead to set file sharing and discovery on both nodes and it still doesn't work.

The lan port led lights are blinking but the network is still unidentified.

I then went to change the cable from cross to the straight one that i use yesterday and it works!

===========================================================================

So i went to take the crosscable to connect to my RT-AC56U router's lan port, there is no led light at all on both the laptop and the router.

If the cross cable is faulty,  there shouldn't be led light when i connect from the laptop to pc. But how come there isn't any light when i use it to connect the laptop to router ?

Can i use the crosscable to connect a laptop to a home-base router (with built in switch) ?

======================================================================

So what could be wrong ?!

Noob

Odd that is started working.

For each of the connections, what is the appropriate cable type?

Hub<—>Router (answer: straight through–hub in category 1, router in category 2)

Hub<—>Hub (answer: crossover–both devices in category 1)

PC<—>Print Server (answer: crossover–both devices in category 2)

PC<—>Router (answer: crossover–both devices in category 2)

Switch<—>Hub (answer: crossover–both devices in category 1)

Switch<—>Switch (answer: crossover–both devices in category 1)

well Cehill,

I am not sure what went wrong.

Cross cable between laptop and PC cant work - but have activity led.

Cross cable between laptop and router cant work - no light at all

Straight cable between laptop and PC working!

It means i have auto-mdix if straight cable work, but whats wrong with the cross ?!

Since cross cable between laptop and pc, & laptop and router are not working,

its pointing to a bad cross over cable.  Both scenarios, should be crossover.

Pins 1-2 should be 3-6 should be swapped.

Hi Cehill,

Thanks for replying.

q1) I am not sure if crosscable can be used for home-base type routers (those with inbuilt switch) as I have other devices connected to the router using straight cable and its working. Can crosscable be use in this type of router (Asus RT-AC56U) then ?

q2) Guess either i will have to buy another crosscable and try it out or use a network cable tester to test my cross cable ..  what do you suggest doing next ?

q3) Lastly, does all interface supporting gigabit uses/supports auto-mdix ?
