Hi All,

I have a dumb question...

I have a Cat4506, Sup II+ with default 32mb onboard flash. I would like to upgrade the IOS to 12.2(53)SG1, which requires 64mb flash.

If I purchase a 64mb flash card to stick in the slot on the supervisor....

Can I insert the card on the fly or will the switch need to be brought down first?

Can I boot an image off the "External" flash? Would I still use boot system bootflash:<image> or would it be like slot0:?

I have done this on the fly and had no issues.  Before doing anything I would format the flash in the switch before moving forward with loading the new IOS on it.

There are times when the card will not be recognized, so make sure you can see the card before proceeding too.

Yes, you can just insert it into the slot.  You do not need to bring down the switch.

Once it is in the switch, then load the IOS using copy tftp slot0; you would then have to change your boot variable to boot from slot0: boot system slot0:

and reboot the box.

To make sure every thing is working properly, I would do this during an outage window not during business hours.
