The hashing algorithm and the whole etherchannel process, is it done in hardware or software?

Etherchannel is handled in hardware on Catalyst switches and that is why different switches support differing types of load-balancing ie. some support just mac-address src and dst, others mac-address/IP and others mac-address/IP/Port numbers.
