Flash Memory size

Hi Everybody,

Does anybody knows why the show version never display a memory size that corresponds to the real size of memory. Typically, you are buying 64 Mb or 512 Mb meormy size. Why does the show ver gives value like 655536K (sector size 512) or 6270K as show here:

Catalyst 6509

65536K bytes of Flash internal SIMM (Sector size 512K).

2811
62720K bytes of ATA CompactFlash (Read/Write)

Thanks for your help

Stephane

Re: Flash Memory size

At least regarding the 6k it´s pretty simple:

If you multiply the 64Mb with 1024 (k*) you will get exactly 65536Kb.

On the 2811 routers the flash memory can be considered as a ATA disc drive.

So the size of your flash memory is valid in the unformatted state.

After the ATA Flash device has been formatted, the remaining capacity is slightly lower.

This is what you can see in show version.

To verify your ATA Flash device you can perform the command sh flash filesys

I hope, this helps!

Re: Flash Memory size

Can we say that typically routers like the 2800/2900, 3800/3900 is generally using a formatted support while this is not the case for Catalyst switch like 4500/6500, 2950/2960 switches.

ISR G1 and ISR G2 (except for the 850, 860, 870, 880 and 890) support CF up to 2Gb.  Some people have commented that they have used sizes of up to 4Gb but I haven't verified it yet.

Depending on the Supervisor Engines of the 4000/4500 and 6000/6500 the same applies (except for the legacy PCMCIA cards) in regards to CF size.  The 3560E/3560X, 3750E/3750X and the 2960S support USB and follow the same size support.

Cisco IOS will read CF/USB that are formated in FAT16.

Hi Joachim,

Thanks a lot for the information, did not know that the flash memory is like a ATA disc drive.

Re: Flash Memory size

Hi,

Thanks for your very useful explanation, I was on wrong track for the 2950/2960 because these units talks about  flash-simulated non-volatile configuration memory and does not support show flash: filesys command. So now I understand that this simulated flash memory is also formatted.

Question: Would you know what is the meaning of the two values for memory in the following:
cisco WS-C2960-24TC-L (PowerPC405) processor (revision H0) with 61440K/4088K bytes of memory

Question: Can we also assume that on board flash for Catalyst 6500 is also formated.

Thanks for all your help

Stephane
