Help !!! cable disconnected on Speed 1000 " switch 2960"

Hi every one,

I have a big problem, when I configure the port 2960x-24TS-L switch on Speed 1000 I have this message:

% LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on interface GigabitEthernet1 / 0/1, changed state to down.

By cons, if I reconfigures on 100 Speed it gets "up".

The network interface card supporting up to 1 GB.

Also, it is reported we used two types of Cat6 cables, a very good quality and one of average quality and this problem only affects PCs connected with the cable AVERAGING quality.

Please is there a solution to force the port and the NIC to work with 1000 MB?

Thank you in advance.

test 1 you went through the patch panel and it worked results normal no problem

test 2 you went direct to the switchport bypassing the patch panel and you got an issue

that sounds as if the cable you used on test 2 is faulty , distance should only be an issue if its over 100metres

Ok, here's a little story about TDR and 2960X:  The TDR functionality for the 2960X is a little bit "weird".  An opposite standard to the rest of the Cisco Catalyst (and Nexus) fleet of switches.  Here are the "rules":

1.  If a pair is GOOD, then it will show up as "Normal" and no length will be displayed;

2.  If a pair is BAD, then it will only the fault (Open or Short, etc) and will display the length of the fault (not the length of the entire wire).

So, I've asked that the remote-end patch panel be unpatched of any cable and a TDR run.

TDR result has come up with the following output:

1.  Pairs A & B are showing an OPEN circuit at approximately 15 metres away.  Makes sense since the patch panel is un-patched, right?

2.  Pairs C & D are showing "NORMAL".  WTF!  How is that possible when nothing is patched at the remote end?

I can only hazard a guess that then entire wire length only has Pair A & B terminated and C & D wasn't.  Is there any other switch (other than a 2960X) available?  I want a "second opinion" on this.

hi LEO
here is the exact topology:
- We have a switch on the 1st floor connected in cascade with three other switches via the G 1/0/21 interfaces G1 / 0/23 and G1 / 0/24.
- No VLAN set except the default VLAN1.
- No port trunk.
- NIC connected with the LEGRAND cable and Cat6 patch cabel operate in 1GB and TDR tests is good.
- We have only  problem with the medium quality cable.
- I eliminated the patch pannel and it also gave the same problem.
- By cons when I tested with 2 meters of the average quality cable the result was good.

hi mark, here is the result of TDR test. the firs is with laptop connected at the RED, the second is with out.

The second picture (tdr_without_nic.jpeg) is telling me the remote-end pins are not properly terminated.

I agree with Leo something's not right on 2nd pic , are you directly connected switch to pc or are you going through patch panel

i'm going through patch panel.

do you get the same issue if you bypass the panel and connect direct to the switch to nic on pc  , theres some layer 1 issue there

gonna check it and back very soon !

Unpatch the cable from the remote-end patch panel.  Run the TDR again.  This'll help determine if the faulty cabling is at the patch panel or not.

No,just selected ones that are connected with a low quality cables.

sounds like you do not have 4 good pairs of wires .   You must have 4 good pairs in order for gigabit to run , whereas for 100 you only need 2 good pairs .  And you are sure that the nics are gigabit nics in the pc's ?
