I've been given an old Cisco 2500 router from work and the enable mode is password protected. I've read the password recovery document. The ctrl-break key sequence don't work. The command o/r 0x2142 returns "% Unknown command or computer name, or unable to find computer address". The IOS version is Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) 2500 Software (C2500-I-L), Version 11.2(18), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
I'm using Hyperterminal version 5.1 on Windows XP SP2.
What else can I try to get into enable mode? Or wipe out the existing startup config? Is there a way to do it with the jumpers?

Do you mean that ctrl+break key after power cycling the box do not work? o/r 0x2142 works if you're in rommon already. What is rommon, it's the mode the router will go into if you succesfully break the boot up sequence.

Hi Westy,
Ctrl-break is seems to be the correct break key sequence. But Press the Break key on the terminal within 60 seconds of turning on the router.
Still if you find any probs just go thro troubleshooting tips given in this link,

Hello,
not sure if this helps, but try Hyperterminal Private Edition version 6.3, you can download it here:

I have a 2501 that I am using for CCNA practice. After reading this thread I decided to try to interrupt the boot sequence on my router as a learning experience.
I too am unable to do so!
Perhaps I am mistaken about what the "break key" is when using hyper terminal.
I assumed that it meant holding down the "Ctrl" key while pressing the "c" key. Is this correct?
The book that I am using is very vague on this point.
Also Hyper Terminal can be configured with many options. [ANSI or VT100 etc.] Could a specific configuration be needed for the break function to work?

i was on the same boat with an old router.
i finally got in by pressing "ctrl + esc" instead of "ctrl + break".
further, please check this do out as cisco suggested break key combinations:

OK I get it now!
The "Break" key is the one labeled "Pause Break" [It's in the upper right corner of the keyboard on my laptop and it's next to the "scroll lock" key on my desktop keyboard.]
Holding down "Ctrl" and pressing this key works like a charm. I get a > prompt after an abort message and pressing "o" gets the Configuration Register menu!
Thanks a lot for clearing this up.

it's good to learn that the issue has been resolved.
