How can I determine the IP address of my Cisco 2950 switch?

Do they have a default IP assigned to them?

I'm trying to access the CMS administration page from my browser. I've already tried 192.168.0.1 and that brings up my gateway (cable modem from Time Warner).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

Tim

Darrens way is probably your best route...I probably over troubleshot the issue.  But for the future, I would still recommend obtaining a cable and/or password.

Oh for God's sake people. The 2950 must be initally setup using Express Setup, procedure detailed in the manual, available here:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2950/hardware/quick/guide/2950gsg/2950gsg2.html

The thing is pre-programmed at an address of 10.0.0.1.   If it was never setup then it is acting like an unconfigured switch and cannot be addressed nor managed until Express Setup isrun, again as detailed in the manual.

It has no firewall but does act as a DHCP server.

So disconnect everything from it, and power it down.

Press and hold the MODE button until all the lights above theMode button turn green - then it is in Expess Setup mode.

THEN connect a single laptop or desktop with dynamic IP addressing enabled ( do not use static address  in pc/laptop ).

THEN, once the pc/laptop has pulled an address from the 2950, open a browser window and put in 10.0.0.1, and you will then see the Express Setup program. You can then configure the switch.

This is NOT a hub - you must know what you are doing to configure it.  If not, just leave it unconfigured.

P.S. If the LEDS above the MODE button all blink instead of being solid, the thing has already been configured with Express Setup. Express Setup is a one shot deal.

If you still cannot find the thing's IP address, using something like nMap or Radmin's Advanced Lan Scanner, then it likely was never configured.  If it is configured you will be able to find it using one of the above tools, easily done if only one pc or laptop is connected to it when you do so.

If you do find its address and it is already configured, enter its address in the browser's address bar and the internal configuration software will come up. Alternatively you can also use Cisco Network Assitant software to manage it.

You're welcome
