I'm trying to set up a Cisco 1811 router, but I think I messed up so I restored the factory defaults using this method:
Method 1
This method uses the config-register 0x2102 command in global configuration mode.
1.
Check the configuration register on the router by issuing the show version command.
The configuration register setting is displayed in the last line of the show version command output and should be set to 0x2102. If this is not the case, enter the config-register 0x2102 command once in global configuration mode.
router#configure terminal
router(config)#config-register 0x2102
router(config)#end
router#
If the show version command is issued again, the same line in the command output will have '(will be 0x2102 at next reload)' appended to the current register setting.
2.
Erase the current start-up configuration on the router with the write erase command.
3.
Reload the router with the reload command. When prompted to save the configuration, DO NOT save.
router#reload
System configuration has been modified. Save? [yes/no]: n
Proceed with reload? [confirm]
Once the router reloads, the System Configuration Dialog appears.
--- System Configuration Dialog ---
Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:
The router is now reset to the original factory defaults.
I got to the line that said " Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:" and I quit out of the hyperteminal as I wanted to do the configuration via the web interface (as I don't really understand the command line yet). The problem is the router isn't giving any ip addresses. I tried the default address (10.10.10.1) but that didn't work. The computer won't even recognize that cat 5 cable is plugged in (I have verifyed that both the computer and cat5 cable work). All that is plugged into the router is a straight through cable coming from the modem (to get Internet) in FastEthernet 0 and a straight through plugged into port number 5 going to the computer. How can I get the router back to the settings it had when I took it out of the box. Thoses settings allowed me to simply plug in a cat 5 cable to a computer, the computer would get an ip address (usually 10.10.10.2) I would open up a web browser and type in 10.10.10.1 the web interface would pop up and I'd be good to go.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Hi - the router comes with a config on it that allows you do just plug a pc in, get an IP address and configure it using the ASDM but you've erased this.
boot the router, go into enable mode by typing 'en' and press enter
type 'conf t' and press enter,
then copy and paste the config below in.
Once your done type 'exit' and press enter
then type 'wr' and enter

I think we may be starting to get somewhere. However The computer gets an invalid ip address of 169.254.187.29 subnet mask 255.255.0.0. Any suggestions?

Hello,
Is the VLAN interface up? Also, if you give a static IP to your PC, can you
ping the router IP?
Regards,
NT
08-26-2010 12:10 PM
VLAN is "
administratively down" Perhpas that's my problem, how do I get VLAN up? If I assign a static ip of 10.10.10.2 subnet 255.255.255.248 default gateway 10.10.10.1 and no dns to the computer I cannot ping the router.
