Hi Experts,
I have a query on HSRP ..
Lets say if i have 4 routers configured with Same HSRP group. How many routers will be in active and standby group.
I assume it will be one router with highest priority under the HSRP group and rest will be in standby mode.
Correct me on this please. it will be helpful if someone explains with different priorities on all the routers.
Thanks,
Srikanth

Hi,
there is only one active device and one standby device so depending upon physical IP address on the interface( highest wins when there is a tie with the priorities), either R1 or R2 will be active and the other( R2 or R1) will be in standby.
Others will be waiting to take the standby state if the current standby device fails( or becomes the active device) and the winner will be R3 with its highest priority.
Regards.

Ok .
Just to get it understand in a better way.
Lets say if i have two routers with same priority and highest in th group then..
Like if i have the below case configured with priorities as: then which would be active and standby.
Priority:
R1# 150
R2# 150
R3# 130
R4# 110
Thanks,
Srikanth

One additional note . . .
The highest priority HSRP router might not be the active gateway router. By default, the router acting as the active gateway will retain the active gateway even if there's another HSRP router with a higher priority unless that router also is (optionally) configured to preempt.
