I am seeing VM and physical servers with static ip addresses assigned to them come up with a 169.x address after a reboot.

The servers are connected to a 6509 switch. The VM servers are connected via a 10 gig trunk port and the physical servers are connected via 1gig copper. Is this an IOS issue. I haven't updated the code on my 6509 so I can rule that out. I have however done IOS updates on the edge 3750's and 2960's.

During a recent migration I faced to the same problem and It seems a new mechanism to avoid duplicate ip addresses on Microsoft OS (Win2008/Win7) and the arp probing in the switches with ios 15.x:
