Identify media type

Hi everyone,

On a C9508, Is there a command which identifies the media type connected on each port.  You see, this particular switch uses

SFP's on all ports and depending on the type of SFP, you will use copper or Fibre to connect the end device.

Hi,

Try:

sh interface ex/x capabilities

and/or

sh interface ex/x transceiver

to see if the optic is gig or 10gig and the type of media you are using.

Using the command sh interface ex/x capabilities, This is what I see:

Ethernet1/1 is up
admin state is up, Dedicated Interface
  Belongs to Po11
  Hardware: 1000/10000 Ethernet, address: left blank
  Description: left blank
  MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000000 Kbit, DLY 10 usec
  reliability 255/255, txload 3/255, rxload 4/255
  Encapsulation ARPA, medium is broadcast
  Port mode is trunk
  full-duplex, 10 Gb/s, media type is 10G
 

Are you saying that 10Gb/s is Fibre and 1000Mb/s is copper?

BTW, I dont have sh interface ex/x transceiver

Hi Tony,

So, in this case the interface is 1/10Gig capable.

Hardware: 1000/10000 Ethernet, address: left blank

The transceiver connected to this port is a fiber 10Gig

full-duplex, 10 Gb/s, media type is 10G

If you use a 1Gig SFP, it should show it as 1gig.

are you sure you don't have:

"sh interface e1/5 transceiver" command?

my bad, I do have the command transceiver,  here's a sample:

    revision is 1
    serial number is left blank
    nominal bitrate is 10300 MBit/sec
    Link length supported for 50/125um OM2 fiber is 82 m
    Link length supported for 62.5/125um fiber is 26 m
    Link length supported for 50/125um OM3 fiber is 300 m
    cisco id is 3
    cisco extended id number is 4
    cisco product id is SFP-10G-SR

If I understand this output correctly, the Cisco product ID is the information I'm looking for?

Correct. So, the connection is 10gig fiber and you are using a short range( SR) optic.
