Install OS on new switch.

Our Educational District just purchased 8 (Refurbished) Cisco Cat 3560 POE switches to upgrade from the dated 2950 switches.

We downloaded the newest OS from our Cisco Account, but now I am lost.  Maybe it's me :)

I start up the switch and connect via the nic-comm port.  The default "switch" name comes up, and I can see the old version "sh ver" etc..  I looked through the manuals supplied and can not see the process to upgrade the OS on the switch via the nic-comm port.  And Google displays a massive time consuming array of how to.

I did read that we could upgrade via out TFTP, where the new .tar is located, but the switch does not recognize the TFTP server.

Any help or links would be very helpful.

what TFTP are you using?

I normally use tftpd32 for updating networking devices. you just need to make sure that tftp service is up.

commands

copy tftp://TFTP_IP/IMAGE_NAME flash:

boot system flash:IMAGE_NAME

reload

We use Solar Winds TFTP on the Network Server.

After typing in your command line:

switch: copy tftp://xx.xx.xx.xx/c3560-ipservices9-tar.150-2.SE5.tar flash:

We get this:

usage: copy [-b <buffer_size>] <src_file> <dst_file>

Hey Robert,

You are missing the destination file name.

Here is an example upgrade:

Switch#copy tftp: flash:
Address or name of remote host []? 192.168.1.2
Source filename []? c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin
Destination filename [c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin]?
Accessing tftp://192.168.1.2/c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin...
Loading c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin from 192.168.1.2 (via Vlan1): !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do agree with Charles over here. Moreover try using tftpd32 (I do use it) instead of any other tftp app.

I am able to get to the TFTP server and reach the

Loading c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin from 192.168.1.2 (via Vlan1): !!!!!!!!!!!!!

However it goes a ways, then I get 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 and !!!!!!!  then 0000000000000000000000000

and after a screen of this it times out.

I tried on different switches and the same...

What did I miss?

O is an indication of an "out of order packet". 

Is your firewall disabled on your laptop/pc?

I shutdown the FW on both the TFTP server and the PC I am using to upgrade the OS on the switch.

I still get the o, but now I get "No space left on device".  I did a delete ....old bin files, but it states file does not exist.

How do I view and delete the files I can not see via dir flash:

The prompt is "switch:" so this means you're entering the command in ROMmon.    Go HERE for details.

The syntax is correct.

I'd suggest you use this command:

archive download-sw tftp://IP_Address/new_IOS.tar

Other useful command switches:

  /allow-feature-upgrade  Allow installation of image with different feature sets
  /destination-system     specify destination system to receive software
  /directory              Specify a directory for images
  /force-reload           Unconditionally reload system after successful sw upgrade
  /imageonly              Load only the IOS image(s)
  /leave-old-sw           Leave old sw installed after successful sw upgrade
  /no-set-boot            Don't set BOOT -- leave existing boot config alone
  /no-version-check       skip version check that prevents incompatible image install
  /only-system-type       specify individual system type to be updated
  /overwrite              OK to overwrite an existing image
  /reload                 Reload system (if no unsaved config changes) after successful sw upgrade
  /safe                   Always load before deleting old version

I agree with the archive command.  I didn't catch that it was a tar file.  Sorry about that.

Connect switch and router with straight cable.

use following commands:

copy tftp://TFTP_IP/IMAGE_NAME flash:
