Hi,
It is dependent on you and your requirement. If you ask me to design the rack network rack for you then I will followup below methodology:
If you have all patch panel in the same rack then the design would be:
1. Fist install the Rack FAN unit and I hope it is already installed in the rack and all patch panels one by one.
2. Your Security devices as Firewall on the top because it is not required daily touchup and height will also safe from cable disconnection or loos error.
2. Cable or Brush panel for dressing the Firewall cables.
3. Keep one U space (If available) and install Cable or brush panel (If you have 2 U switch) and after it one switch. step 3 you can repeat for all switches.
4. Keep 1 U space and install the WLC and down the WLC install a cable or brush panel.
5. after that rest all devices as UCM or servers.
6. Backside the rack you can install the PDUs.
But if you have 2 racks then Keep 1 rack for cable management and one for equipment only.

is it bad to install the hardware without a 1u separation between each one?

Hi,
No, it is not bad but it is recommended to keep airflow open. Becuase I am not aware of your device airflow direction. Read the device manual about it.
