Inter-vlan Routing

Cisco Newbie here. The IP routing command does not work on my switch. what could be the problem?

Routing can be unsupported on the switch.

Please share show version and show inventory.

Switch can be L2 or L3; L2 is designated to be an access switch; switching and forwarding traffic at layer 2 based on MAC addresses.   "IP routing" command will work on L3 only; Those L3 can work at both L2 level and L3;  In addition to what L2 switch can do, L3 can do routing -if u turn it on or wish it to do. 

all virtual IOS image for virtual lab like CML are L3 and L2;
